In 16th century Japan, the Portuguese would, as a special treat, fry their food on the quatuor tempora. The Japanese saw it, liked the idea, and now we have Tempura. It's a Latin word, not a Japanese word. I make a point of eathing tempura as part of my ember day observations.

When I was growing up, we always celebrated Ember Days. We would have special Eucharists, pray for postulents and seminarians, and also remember all clergy in the diocese.
