The Baptism of the Lord
• Opening Sentence
Jesus said, "I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." John 8:12
• Collect of the Day ~ First Sunday after the Epiphany ~ The Baptism of our Lord
Father
in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed
him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that
all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made,
and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy
Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
• A Collect for Sundays
Lord
God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ triumphed over the powers of
death and prepared for us our place in the new Jerusalem: Grant that we,
who have this day given thanks for his resurrection, may praise you in
that City of which he is the light, and where he lives and reigns for
ever and ever. Amen.
• A Collect for Mission
O
God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole
earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and
bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
• A Prayer of St. Chrysostom
Almighty
God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our
common supplications to you; and you have promised through your
well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his
Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfil now, O Lord, our desires
and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge
of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.
• Hymn
The Choir and Congregation of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Worcester, MA singing Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies.
Christ, whose glory fills the skies,
Christ, the true, the only Light,
Sun of Righteousness, arise,
Triumph o’er the shades of night;
Dayspring from on high, be near;
Day-star, in my heart appear.
Dark and cheerless is the morn
Unaccompanied by Thee;
Joyless is the day’s return
Till Thy mercy’s beams I see;
Till they inward light impart,
Glad my eyes, and warm my heart.
Visit then this soul of mine,
Pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
Fill me, Radiancy divine,
Scatter all my unbelief;
More and more Thyself display,
Shining to the perfect day.
Words: Charles Wesley
Tune: Ratisbon
